Register for the third quarter meeting of the Arkansas Trucking Association Safety Management Council on Thursday, September 1 at 10:30 am at ArcBest, 8401 McClure Drive, Fort Smith, AR 72916.
 
SESSION 1: Selling Safety

In this presentation, Arkansas Trucking Association's director of safety services will share strategies to get buy in from all employees to support safe behaviors and safety programs. He’ll also discuss ways to prevent injuries and accidents.

Mike Brust grew up around trucking. His dad was a truck driver, and he holds a class A CDL.  He has a degree in transportation and logistics from the University of Arkansas and has over 25 years in the trucking industry.  He has worked for FedEx Freight as their corporate safety manager for over 20 years, director of safety for Southern Refrigerated Transport for two years and has three years working for Protective Insurance performing safety and loss prevention services.
 
In his current role with the Arkansas Trucking Association, Brust assists with the Arkansas Trucking Association’s Self Insurers’ Fund for workers compensation, conducts mock DOT and OSHA audits and performs certifications for both forklifts and hazardous material. He answers questions on DOT and OSHA regulations.  He is also a certified NATMI instructor.

 
SESSION 2: OSHA Consultation Program
Clark Thomas, OSHA consultation Project manager for the Department of Labor, will present the safety services his team can provide. He'll also cover unsafe acts and conditions that lead to injuries, plus tips for reducing injuries in the workplace

Clark E. Thomas is the OSHA consultation project manager for the Arkansas Department of Labor. Thomas’s formal education was received from AM & N College (now University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), where he earned a Bachelor of Art (BA) degree in industrial art.  He also earned a M.A. degree in ecclesiastical studies from Jackson Theological Seminary, based at Shorter College, North Little Rock, Arkansas.
 
Thomas has received several certificates from the OSHA Training Institute for completing studies in: accident investigation, accident prevention, developing and setting up safety and health programs, initial OSHA compliance course, grain industry safety, basic consultation course and other studies provided by the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville that further prepared him for the safety field.
 
Thomas has been certified as Safety Professional Source by the Arkansas’ Workers Compensation Commission (AWCC). He is a member of the Arkansas Forestry Association and AFSCME Local 1399.
 
He has been employed by the Arkansas Department of Labor for approximately 40 years where he currently serves as safety administrator for the safety division, which consists of approximately 17 employees. His job duties include processing reports, making public speaking appearances, presenting safety presentations and monitoring the effectiveness of the overall safety and health program. Thomas's previous job duties consisted of serving as OSHA consultant, OSHA compliance officer, training coordinator, state safety supervisor, and state safety inspector.
 
During Clark’s tenure with the Arkansas Department of Labor, Safety Division, he has written several safety and health manuals which have been utilized by the safety and health staff as a resource guide.
 
Clark was a speaker at the National OSHA Consultation meeting in 2004 and voted as a top Project Manager in Region VI in 2005 and 2009.  During 2005, he received an Oscar Award for establishing a Teen Safety Program and a SHARP Association in Arkansas.

  • ATA members who attend without registering or register but do not attend will be charged $25.
  • Out of courtesy, if you decide to attend after the registration deadline, please contact the ATA office.
  • ATA welcomes guests and non-members to Council meetings for $50.
